Carolyn,

A typical parallel ide (PATA) setup would look might look like this

             --------hdd1 (set to master)
             |
ide1 ---
             |
             --------hdd2 (set to slave)

             --------cdrom1 (set to master)
             |
ide2 ---
             |
             --------cdrom2 (set to slave)

However you might also have cable select cables in which case the drives
might be jumpered for CS (make sure everything is consistent)
Try entering the bios and making sure that all 4 channels are set to be
auto-probed (usually on the first bios screen) and not disabled.
(Some times a bios tries to be smart and reset settings when new drives
are put on the bus)

Things to check:
Are all drives being probed and found in the bios setup and in bios
boot?
Do you have SATA and PATA devices or just good old PATA. (make sure
boot order is behaving for that)
Is the boot order set correctly (eg Cdroms before C drive)
Turn off any bios splash screens so you can see the Bios POST
Can you see the "Press any key to boot from CD...." message ?
Use a PS2 keyboard instead of USB to catch the 'Boot to CD' message
(while a usb keyboard may work in the bios it often doesn't work to
catch the CD)

Hope one of those might help,

Rian Bogle
