There are detailed instructions included with the nvidia driver you 
download from
http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html.  There is no need to recompile 
the kernel if Mandriva supplies a
kernel module dev package.

After googling Mandriva, I would stear clear of the distro if you 
actually want to learn something
about linux.  Working with distributions like Mandriva offer very little 
resources for assistance outside
of their "world".   Sticking with something more established, you will 
find the wealth of online *nix knowledge
much easier to digest.
