Stacy,

Sounds like you want to "clone" a fresh install for installation to
multiple systems (in the first case). In the second case sounds more
like your looking for a snapshot of a system, to be able to restore from.

Question: What is the goal of what your trying to accomplish? Do you
want to be able to re-install a system to a known (static)
configuration? Do you want to install multiple systems to a known
configuration? Do you want to back up a live, changing system for
re-installing in case of disk failure? If you describe your situation in
a little more detail, that can help the group better answer your question.

Assumption is that your only concerned with the OS, not user data. Are
you concerned with user data (accounts, files, settings, etc)?

The USGS in Flagstaff has done some extensive work in the realm of
supporting large number of systems (+200 system) in various flavors of
OSes (SuSE, Redhat, Solaris, OpenBSD, Windows, Windows Svr, MacOS X,
MacOS X Server) and configurations (workstations, laptops, servers[http,
ftp, ntp, dns, file, rsync, you name it]) using highly automated
installations. Cloning was tried, but the difference in hardware was
problematic.

While this message doesn't specifically answer your question, hopefully
it can start a dialog that will get you to the best solution for your needs.
