With Dapper available, I do not find Breezy a viable candidate for
advocating Linux as a desktop system for newcomers, and I've worked with
both. If we are uncomfortable with Dapper, that should be resolved
before installing an outdated distro without telling students we are
doing so.
For starters, the university VPN uses MPPE, which isn't part of the
kernel until 2.6.15; Breezy uses 2.6.12.
Breezy's support for wireless is poor and difficult to configure without
installing additional tools (not all of which are in the repository).
Dapper comes with much better networking support and tools to manage it,
and is likelier to see the 2.6.17 kernel (Broadcom support) than Breezy.
Having installed Dapper on a laptop with an external Broadcom wifi card
and on a desktop machine with Atheros, I'm speaking from experience.
I've also upgraded machines from Breezy to Dapper and even on a T1
connection the time and energy expended is a waste if a newer distro is
available. It's annoying enough that Ubuntu's made a separate upgrade CD
for that purpose.
Dapper's font selection is superior, if even only for the inclusion of
DejaVu and DejaVu Condensed. Its implementation of GNOME is better and
friendlier to GLX support. Dapper is more aggressive about keeping a
current version of Firefox instead of just the version that was released
with Dapper.
A lot changes in the Linux world in nine months. Part of the reason for
choosing Ubuntu is to have them in your hands instead of waiting for the
Debian team's blessings.
